It is always thrilling to see new restaurants opening in Stavanger! This time the new kid on the block is Kjeringholmen Brasserie . The restaurant opened recently in the venue that used to be occupied by Bølgen & Moi inside Oljemuseet on Kjeringholmen (hence the name). It is quite a big restaurant and there are indoor and outdoor seating and if you sit outside, you get a great view of the waterfront area and the bridge Bybrua.
We visited on a Wednesday evening in August 2025 and as the weather was beautiful, we decided to sit outside. There were not that many guests, and my guess is that many are still aware that the restaurant has opened. The menu is not extensive (4 starters and 5 mains) and it seems like the aim is to create a French style brasserie. I’m not sure how the typical Piemontese Vitello tonnato made it to the menu but we decided to share escargot (snails) to start and steak au poivre and monkfish as mains. The wine menu is not extensive either but there are 10-15 whites and 10-15 reds to choose from, and the pricing is quite reasonable.
It did not take long to get the snails and it was served in a typical French manner with lots of butter, garlic, parsley and bread. We could tell that the staff probably needs a bit more training as there was a lack of focus on the details. When we got the snails, we had no serviettes and there were three forks on the platter. All a sudden the mains were served as we were still enjoying the snails, so the timing was off. But the plates were served but we had to ask to get cutlery as this was not in place. As Nikki cut into her steak, it was clear to see that this was well done! We should of course have mentioned that we wanted it medium when ordering but this slipped our mind as it is usually the waiter that will bring this up. When we gave feedback about this, they took it back to the kitchen immediately but unfortunately it took some time to make it again so I was done with my monkfish before she got her steak. The pepper steak was good, it was tender and surprisingly pepper spicy and the French fries was excellent. My monkfish was also great with various fried vegetables. It was served with a mash of potatoes, and the dish had a rustic look to it.
All in all, this place has a lot of potential with a fantastic location and great views. I guess that the issues that we experienced are due to inexperienced staff in a new restaurant and hopefully this will improve over time. Thanks to Kjeringholmen Brasserie for doing their best to correct the issues and for giving us a discount on the final bill, we do appreciate the great customer service! We look forward to returning in the future to try other items on the menu.
Pros:
- Frech style brasserie with a great view
- reasonably priced wines
- lovely outdoor area
Cons:
