The K-Chicken has now been open in Stavanger for over a year, and I stopped back recently to see how things have evolved. In summer this place comes into its own — a lovely outdoor terrace right on Sølvbergtorget that's surprisingly easy to walk straight past without noticing. Check out the review from last year here!
During this visit we sat inside, and most things were as I remembered — except the menu has grown a bit. Fried chicken is still very much the headline act, as it should be, but they've also introduced a proper spread of hansik, or traditional Korean dishes: tteok, bulgogi, bibimbap and more. I'd been looking forward to trying the bibimbap, but it turns out that's a winter-only dish, so spicy pork bulgogi stepped in instead.
The space itself is bright and modern, and this evening had a good crowd both inside and out. Several beers on tap, which pair nicely with the spicier end of the menu.
The Spicy pork bulgogi was served quickly, no waiting around. Bulgogi, for the uninitiated, is thinly sliced pork marinated thoroughly before being grilled or pan-fried — and this version delivered on both fronts. Tender meat, packed with flavors from the marinade. Served alongside a small salad, a bowl of rice, and a portion of kimchi. Eating it brought back happy memories of wandering the streets of Seoul, eating our way through the city.
There was room for dessert, and it came in the form of a Basque cheesecake supplied by La Paisana. I'm a devoted fan of baked cheesecake, and La Paisana does the proper Basque style — that gorgeous, deliberately scorched top. Creamy through the centre, slightly firmer toward the edges, and delicious the whole way through. Very nearly transported us straight back to San Sebastián.
In short: The K-Chicken isn't the place for a long, lingering dinner — it's the place you duck into for a quicker meal built around a genuinely flavourful Korean dish and a cold beer. And if the weather plays along, you can eat it all under open sky on Sølvbergtorget.
