Another round at GiMi

We went back to GiMi Restaurant & Bar for a second time and spoiler alert: the chicken liver terrine is worth the trip alone. If you want to check out the review from our first visit, please check it out here. There's something genuinely satisfying about returning to a good restaurant as you can revisit the dishes you loved, and working your way into the ones you haven't tried yet. That's exactly what we did when we dropped back into Gimi this summer.
Getting ready for Gimi Gimi at Eiganes Cocktails
This time we sat along the bar, which works beautifully as you get a front-row view of the chefs at work, and the evening takes on a different rhythm for it. I opened with a lovely coffee-based cocktail, and for the food we went with a Chardonnay from Crystallum in South Africa.
Crystallum chardonnay The chicken liver terrine Brioche
We started with the bone marrow served with bread from Molino Bakery, alongside Gimi's own chicken liver terrine. The terrine is something special as it was rich, full-bodied and packed with flavour, and absolutely glorious with the fresh, soft brioche. I still dream about that brioche! The marrow is excellent with the grilled sourdough and, crucially, that grilled lemon that comes alongside. That said, parts of the marrow were a touch under cooked for our liking. The same applied for the negima unfortunately. The grill flavour was there and that lovely char we remembered from last time but they came out quite pink in the middle. Easily sorted: we asked for them to go back on the grill a little longer, and all was well.
Bone marrow Negima dish Chicken liver terrine Monkfish Chartreuse At Gimi
The most beautiful plate of the night, was the monkfish. Served in a butter sauce and finished with greenery and flowers, the flavour lived up to the presentation entirely.
All in all, this was another good evening at Gimi. The wine list is outstanding, and the menu seems to shift with the seasons. They've also started doing Saturday lunch, and have hosted winemaker's dinners on a couple of occasions. A few dishes weren't quite cooked as they should have been this time, and I'd hope (and expect) that consistency becomes a focus. We'll be back regardless: this is what I'd call proper comfort food, done with real care.
