Soi4 - A Rainy Night, A Bowl of Khao Soi & Zero Regrets

I popped into Soi 4 in Sandnes during Madugå and fell head over heels for their khao soi. For the uninitiated, khao soi is a rich, dreamy curry noodle soup from northern Thailand — one we first fell for on a trip through Chiang Mai a few years back. So when the craving hit on a cold, soggy February evening, Soi4 was the obvious answer. Because let's be real, we're not just EatingOutInStavanger, we're also EatingOutInSandnes!

The Vibe

Tucked into Kirkegata 4 (yes, that's where the name comes from — clever!), Soi4 spreads across two floors with an outdoor terrace that's surely a summer gem. There's a bar on both levels, so this place wears its bar-restaurant hybrid identity proudly. Think laid-back, lively, and just the right kind of casual.

The Menu

Don't come here expecting a classic Thai restaurant experience — there's no tom yam or som tam in sight. This is Asian fusion territory: beef salad, chicken with satay sauce, Korean BBQ spare ribs and more. But don't panic, traditionalists! The family behind Soi4 also runs Lille Bangkok just around the corner, so your pad thai cravings are never far away.

The Food

Nikki went for the grilled panaeng curry with sirloin — which curiously arrives with potatoes, though a swap to rice was no issue at all. The curry was luscious and warming, and the sirloin? Tender, cooked to a perfect medium, with gorgeous charred edges. Could it have used a little more heat? Perhaps. But honestly, it was a very happy bowl.

I went straight for the khao soi, naturally, and chose tempura scampi as my protein. The noodle soup was rich, deeply flavourful and loaded with lovely vegetables — exactly what a rainy February evening ordered. The scampi was decent, though I'll note it hit even harder during Madugå when I had it with sirloin instead. A lesson learned for next time!

The restaurant was quiet when we visited — just a handful of guests — so the food arrived quickly. No complaints there!

The Drinks

Carlsberg and Guinness on tap, bottles aplenty, and of course the Thai classics — Chang and Singha — because what's Asian fusion without a cold Chang in hand? The wine list is a little on the slim side, so wine lovers, you've been gently warned.

The Verdict

Pros:

• Asian fusion done well, with a great beer selection to match

• Two floors + outdoor area = always a good time

• Khao soi on the menu is genuinely rare — treasure it!

Cons:

• The wine list could use some love

Bottom line: Soi4 is your spot if you want good food, cold beers, and good company — without the pressure of a formal Thai restaurant setting. Come for the khao soi, stay for the vibes.
