Spiseriet : Harbour views, local produce, and a set menu that simply does everything well

We've been to Spiseriet a number of times now, and it remains one of those places you're always happy to return to. In the summer there's a lovely outdoor area; the rest of the year, you sit inside with a genuinely spectacular view over Stavanger's harbour.

Spiseriet Interior Entrance
We visited on a beautiful June evening for an event with a set menu which meant starting the night with an aperitif outside in the sunshine. Not a bad way to begin. We started with yellowtail kingfish ceviche and strawberries which was beautiful on the plate and every bit as good to eat. The strawberry brought a fresh, slightly unexpected lift to the whole thing.
Ceviche Veal tataki Spiseriet
We moved on to veal tataki topped with variations of onion. This was really delicious for a meat lover and it was a genuinely generous portion. Solid in the best sense of the word.
We switched back to seafood and got turbot in a legume sauce with caviar & warm brioche. The sauce here was outstanding, studded with legumes. What sealed it was the brioche: fresh out of the oven, warm and impossibly airy. I love good bread, and this was exactly my kind of thing.
We got a a little breather between courses and got some sorbets. I'm a big fan of sea buckthorn, so this landed well as it was sharp, bracing, and exactly what was needed before the main event.
Turbot Brioche Sorbets Sirloin Dessert Wines
The main event was a dry-aged sirloin from Nyyyt. It was a substantial piece of dry-aged sirloin with sauce and a mushroom and onion salad alongside. Rustic rather than refined / a proper comfort food portion in other words.
Dessert was local strawberries and ice cream. Simple, seasonal, and a fitting way to close out a June evening.
This was a lovely menu. Perhaps not groundbreaking but sometimes you just want genuinely good food, and that's precisely what this was. There was real variety here in ingredients, texture, flavors and colors, and it all came together without any fuss. What impresses most is how many things Spiseriet does well at once: a solid lunch spot, a proper dinner destination, set menus and à la carte. Add a strong wine list at fair prices, and you've got something rather rare. The conclusion? If you haven't been to Spiseriet yet, it's well past time you paid them a visit.
