Last year the Indian restaurant Masti at Sola closed even if the reviews were good from both Aftenbladet and us here at EatingOutInStavanger. It didn't take long before Delhi Darbar announced they'd be taking over the same premises. They opened in April 2026, and we finally made a visit.

The space in Skjoldgården looks more or less identical to Masti's which makes sense when you're carrying on the same kind of restaurant. It's functional rather than charming, and that's probably the fairest thing to say about it. The menu, on the other hand, is substantial: all the classics are here including tikka masala, butter chicken, rogan josh, tandoori, biryani, naan plus dedicated vegetarian and vegan menus. They also stock Indian beer, which pairs rather well with anything carrying a bit of spice.

We started with poppadoms and an ice-cold Kingfisher while we worked out our order. Dishes can be ordered at different heat levels depending on how much spice you want. Food arrived within about 15 minutes, served in bowls with lovely light basmati rice alongside. I like the bowl concept as it makes sharing straightforward. One small thing: our plates came out quite cold, and warmed plates would have made a real difference.

  • Lamb Rogan Josh
  • Chicken curry
  • Rice and naan

My choice was lamb Rogan Josh that I ordered spicy, and it was excellent. The lamb was tender, the sauce rich and properly spiced exactly how I want it. We had garlic naan alongside, and those were terrific too.

Nikki's chicken came out a little on the dry side. We're more used to cooking with thigh meat at home rather than breast, which does tend to dry out so this may simply be a matter of what you're accustomed to.

All in all, warming Indian food was exactly the right call on a dark, rain-soaked autumn day. And a practical note: Delhi Darbar is perfectly placed if you need dinner before heading to the Wednesday quiz at Kaktus.

Highlights

  • Plenty to choose from on the menu

  • Both vegan and vegetarian menus

  • Indian beer on offer

  • Excellent lamb rogan josh

Watch out for

  • Plates could do with warming

  • The room itself isn't the cosiest

  • Chicken ran a touch dry

Until next bite, Gard & Nikki
