Tex-Mex at Mexico

I stopped by Restaurant Mexico on a warm summer day in July 2025 and I was quite pleased when I noticed that Mexico offered an option for al fresco dining. The restaurant is in a picturesque cobblestone street near Sølvberget in downtown Stavanger and it is an offspring from a Mexico restaurant that used to be on the harbour of Stavanger.

We were there quite early so the restaurant was empty, so we got a table and got our menus fast. The menu contains dishes like quesadilla, nachos, burrito, fajitas, taco, chimichanga - and spareribs. We got some tortilla chips and salsa while we made our final decisions, and it only took about 15 minutes before our food was served. My friend had the spare ribs and was happy with this. It looked a bit dry, but it was quite tasty and very tender.

I decided to have the “comida corrida combinacion” which in this case translates to a combination of burrito, flautas and nachos. It was quite a big portion, and it was tasty – who doesn’t love lots of melted cheese? I must admit that I have only been to Mexico (the country that is) once so I am not an expert – but I would still argue that this is more of a tex-mex restaurant than a Mexican restaurant. I enjoyed the food but to be picky I have to say that I would have loved to get a guacamole with more taste (I love to make mine in a mortar with lots of good avocado, chili, coriander and lime); I would have enjoyed a salsa with more taste from fresh tomatoes and acidity from lime and a burrito filling with more consistency. I guess the conclusion is that this was not a culinary adventure. But then again, every dinner does not have to be a culinary adventure to be enjoyable.

Thanks for a filling meal, Mexico. Next time I will try the tacos to see if this gives me a throwback to Mexico!

Pros:

- big portions and value for money

- option to sit outside

- various beers to choose from

Cons:

- more tex-mex than Mexican

- guacamole and salsa could have been better
