Persian food at Greener Food

It’s not every day you stumble across Persian cuisine in this part of town, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at Greener Food on Forus. We stopped by early on a weekday evening, and while there were only a handful of guests in the dining room, the space itself felt more like a venue for large events than a cozy restaurant.

The menu offers a solid variety, and we decided to dive into what they describe as Persian classics. Many of the dishes fall into the “stew” category, so this is definitely the kind of place where you’ll want to bring friends and share—perfect for tasting your way through several flavours.


It took a little while before a bottle of water appeared on the table; it would’ve been nice if it arrived together with the menus. After about 30 minutes, the food was rolled into the dining room on a small trolley—a charming detail—and the aroma of saffron hit immediately. Iran is famous for it, and here it was unmistakable in both the dishes and the rice.


I went for Ghormeh Sabzi, a beloved herb stew made with fragrant greens, kidney beans, and tender lamb, served with saffron rice. The flavour was rich, the meat nicely soft, but I would have enjoyed it more if the dish had been served hotter.

Nikki chose Gheymeh Bademjan, a stew of aubergine and lamb with yellow split peas simmered in a tomato-based sauce with Persian spices. A delicious dish as well, though it seemed like there may have been saffron in the stew too—which gives a very distinct flavour. Again, the temperature could have been higher.

We also shared a small side dish called Torshi Gojeh, a mix of pickled vegetables. This was bright, refreshing, and worked beautifully to cut through the richness of the stews.


All in all, it was exciting to explore a cuisine we don’t often encounter in the area. The venue clearly seems designed for larger groups and events, which made the atmosphere feel a bit empty with only a few diners around. And while the flavours were good, we would definitely have appreciated hotter food.
