Spicy curry and biryani at Masti Sola

We usually head to town (which means Stavanger) when we go out to eat but we also try to visit places in our neighborhood Sola. We stopped by Masti Indisk Mat & Bar on a weekday recently and as they name implies, their focus is on Indian food. The restaurant was larger than expected and the menu was quite extensive. They have curry dishes, tandoori dishes, vegetarian options and fish options. We soon got some papadums to nibble on while exploring the menu and ended up ordering fish curry and a chicken biryani. I’m not sure this can be called Indian paella as mentioned on the menu but that is just an observation from our side.

We started out with a small salad (listed under naan bread for some reason) and this was not very exciting. But soon we got lovely garlic naan bread and as you might have noticed, some of us are bread lovers and enjoy a fresh out of the oven bread and this did not disappoint. We also got pre-heated plates which we applaud as there are way too many cold serving plates out there. We also got the option of choosing how spicy we wanted the food (from a scale from 1 to 6) and we were a bit cocky this evening and asked for 5 on the scale – Madras.

The fish curry was rich and the wolffish (known as steinbit in Norwegian) is good to use in stews like this. The curry was spicy indeed, but I would have enjoyed seeing a bit more sauce in the stew itself. It was good that we had some bread and raita on the side to keep that spiciness at a controllable level! Nikki’s biriyani was also tasty and spicy indeed – and with lovely juicy pieces of chicken. I would however have liked to see a fluffier and lighter biryani but then again, maybe there are different styles of biriyani.

All in all, a warming and flavorful meal in the heart of Sola! And yes, you can also get an ice-cold beer to “put out the fire” if you go all in and order the spicy food like we did. We enjoy our spicy Indian food and would not mind stopping by again to taste more of their menu!

Pros:

- extensive menu, something for everyone

- they have cold, large beer

Cons:

- Not the coziest area

- lack of atmosphere due to few guests
