Sotto brings back Italian memories

On our wedding day, we slipped away to Stavanger to have lunch and we ended up choosing Sotto - after talking to some EatingOutInStavanger followers on the bus actually . We were lucky to get a table, as this restaurant has become really popular! The restaurant is located underneath CinCin, which is where the name comes from (if you know your Italian). They focus on Italian dishes and close at 5:30 PM, so it's primarily a lunch spot.
As we were at an Italian restaurant, we started with a glass of Chianti and a Peroni beer while we looked at the menu. It offers some pasta, a few panuozzi (a type of Italian sandwich), salad, etc. We ordered the Ribollita soup and vitello tonnato, though several other dishes on the menu were also tempting. First, we were served one of their antipasti – bruschetta Calabrese. We got a delicious fresh piece of bread made from pizza dough topped with ricotta cream, ‘Nduja, and mozzarella, and it was incredibly tasty. ‘Nduja can be very spicy, but mixed with ricotta, it was just flavourful.
But it didn’t take long before the other dishes arrived. Ribollita is a hearty Tuscan stew with bread, potatoes, and beans – a perfect dish for a cold and rainy Saturday like this. We have fond memories of Ribollita, as we enjoyed it in Siena many years ago on one of our many trips to Italy!
My vitello tonnato is a typical dish from Piedmont, consisting of thin slices of veal topped with salad and a dressing that is basically a tuna mayonnaise. It might sound strange to use a seafood-flavoured mayo on meat, but I think it works perfectly. I might have preferred the veal slices to be a bit thinner, but other than that, it was a great lunch dish.
We had to rush off to an important sauna appointment, but next time I hope to try the caponata or maybe a panuozzo. Thank you so much for a flavourful meal, Sotto. We look forward to stopping by again very soon! By the way, now I really feel like going back to Piedmont!
