Feeling nostalgic at Ostehuset

For a while, Ostehuset was our go-to neighbourhood café, so we found ourselves stopping by again and again—often alongside a good number of fellow siddiser (nickname for a person from Stavanger). Especially on Saturdays, back when they were located in Hospitalgata (where CinCin is now), there was something uniquely charming about squeezing in at long communal tables, shoulder to shoulder with strangers over coffee and pastries.

Ostehuset’s story goes all the way back to 1999, and a lot has happened since then. These days, you’ll find them in the eastern part of town, right by Lervigtunet Park, in the same food-loving neighborhood as Monella, Brøl, The Shack, Kafe Oransjeriet, and more. I stopped by on a Saturday and was a bit surprised that it wasn’t busier—but that made for a calm and relaxed visit.

In many ways, Ostehuset feels reassuringly familiar. The café offers freshly baked bread, a solid selection of cheeses (true to the name), tapas, croissants, and also functions as a proper deli. We grabbed a table to enjoy a cup of coffee, and the croissants that day were generously sized—which I always appreciate. The croissant itself was good, and you’ll also find classics like pain au chocolat and cinnamon buns. Beyond the pastries, there’s a full menu featuring sandwiches, hot dishes, pizza, and salads. The menu is available online on their homepage in case you want to study it.

The space is a large, open room, and it’s great to see that some of the long communal tables are still there. Even better, there’s a lovely outdoor seating area that really shines on warm summer days.

One thing I truly love is that they’ve held on to the deli concept. This is the kind of place where you inevitably leave with a little something extra to take home. Think quality olive oils from producers like Olio Anfosso and Frantoio Muraglia, sauces, vinegars from Giusti, pasta, canned tomatoes, olives, and other pantry staples. There’s also a strong local touch, with chocolates from Fjorden sjokolade, marmalades from Litlestol, cheese from Stavanger ysteri, and more.

In many ways, Ostehuset is a bit of a Kinder egg—a café, a deli, and even a catering service all rolled into one. So next time you find yourself in the eastern part of Stavanger, keep Ostehuset in mind, whether you’re after a quick lunch or looking to pick up something delicious to serve at home.

Pros:

  • Varied and appealing café menu

  • Excellent deli selection

  • Great outdoor seating in summer

Cons:

  • Closes at 6 PM
