Norwegians love their bread, so it comes as little surprise that yet another bakery has found its way onto the Stavanger food scene. The newest arrival is Selma Kafé og Konditori, which had its grand opening by local celebrity June Kommune inside Magasin Blaa just a few days ago — and the buzz is already building.

This is a casual, no-fuss kind of place: you order at the counter, and the bright, airy space fits around 30–40 guests comfortably. With a glass ceiling and large windows opening onto Verksgata, the room has a lovely, light-filled quality that makes it an instantly inviting spot to linger over lunch.

Unsurprisingly for a bakery, bread is the undisputed star of the show. You can pick up a whole loaf to take home, but the real draw is the selection of open-faced sandwiches (smørbrød) served on a variety of breads, alongside fresh salads. And for those with a sweet tooth, Selma delivers a solid lineup of cookies and pastries to round things out.

I went for the shrimp sandwich— and it was generously loaded with shrimp, egg, vegetables and mayo. In other words, just what you are looking for in a shrimp sandwich. For dessert, a slice of suksesskake hit the spot: this classic Norwegian cake with its signature yellow cream filling is simply hard to beat (let's be honest, it's all about the topping). They also have a new viral fruitcake that seems to be trending on TikTok.

Being a brand-new opening, there were a few teething issues — the water carafe needed a refill, I had to ask for cutlery, I had to look around for the napkin etc. Small things, all easily ironed out as the team finds its rhythm.

This place has all the makings of a go-to lunch and meet-up spot, especially on a lazy Saturday when you want good coffee, a proper smørbrød, and a sunny seat by the window.

Pros:

  • Ready-made open sandwiches

  • Great cake selection

  • Opens early

Cons:

  • Limited hot food options

  • No alcohol service
